Instead of clogging Channel 16 with non emergency requests for radio checks try this:
Set your VHF radio to Channel 28.  Key your microphone and ask for a radio check.
You will get an immediate automated response with your voice repeated back to you.

~Use Channel 27 if you are in the Shinnecock, NY or Mystic, CT. area.
~Use Channel 24 if you are in the Moriches, NY or Saybrook, CT. area.
